Candy Man

The Halloween season is always lots of fun and central to that fun is candy!  This year, it seems like our candy jar was full from October 1 – November 1.  Yes, we have a candy jar courtesy of Bryan, and I think it’s his way of slowly torturing me.  Anyway, at the beginning of the month, Nana sent a box of candy for the girls, and mid-October Grandma Wooton sent more candy.  Rachel was in heaven!  I felt like an alcoholic at a bar.

One night, I found Rachel on the couch with the cookie jar and a mess of candy wrappers all around.  It was so cute that of course I took a picture.  By the time that Halloween came around, we had probably consumed enough sugar to make 1000 cakes. All of that extra sugar gave me the energy to get out the Halloween decorations.   A couple of nights before Halloween, we put up decorations in the house.  It is possible that we have more to decorate for Halloween than all of the other holidays combined.

This year Rachel bought her costume with birthday money that she had saved.  She was going to get an Elsa costume but changed her

mind when she saw a matching pirate costume for her and Sarah.  I didn’t feel one bit guilty for not spending my own money on her costume, because she has an entire closet of very (and I mean straight from Disney World) nice dress-up clothes.  Why should I fork over roughly $80.00 for a Halloween costume?  The pirate costume was really awesome, and it will certainly be worn by little sister.

Sarah wasn’t sure what all the trick-or-treating was about, but all of the decorations and weird looking costumes really got her attention!  As we walked toward a neighbors house, she wanted to run from one spooking yard display to the other.  Rachel whined about not wanting to hang out with babies, because Sarah was going to trick-or-treat with some new friends (twin 2-year olds that are adorable!).  After about 5 minutes of my nerves feeling like they were being plucked out of my skin, I told both kids that they were going to do what I said and have a good time or go home!  Yes, I really did mean it.  It had been a bad week and I just wanted to go to bed.

After the coming to Jesus meeting, things got a little better.  Sarah trick-or-treated with her little friends for a few minutes then I put her in the stroller and took Rachel to trick or treat with her friends.  Fortunately, she found her friends in their usual meeting place and all was well!  We spent a significant amount of time at the “chainsaw” house.  The owners of the “chainsaw” house have small kids and really get into Halloween – the dad dresses up like Jason and sits with a chainsaw staring at the kids.  Strobe lights and the Halloween theme song really top off the effect!

About 7:00, I took Sarah home and readied her for bed, while Rachel trick or treated with her group of friends.  This group of friends included two parents and an adult-aged big sister, so I knew Rachel couldn’t get into too much trouble!  After returning home, a few friends came over and hung out for a little while and that was fun.  I was too unorganized and grumpy this year to get a real party together.  Halloween is on a Saturday next year and I have an entire year to get ready!
