Hair

In the great wait/anticipation of my 3rd (and yes, likely my last baby) I wonder whether or not baby girl 3 will be bald or have hair.  Of all the things to speculate about, this probably seems really, really, really silly.  Right now, speculation regarding the trivial is likely my way of diverting my mind from the constant stream of other stuff.  Bald baby vs. head-full-of-hair baby was a source of intense discussion around the Wooton household when I as a kid.  For some reason, my dad was biased toward “bald-headed babies”.  I think that Dad’s bias is because all 3 of his kids were born “without a stitch of hair”.  Mom didn’t seem to care – she actually thought the topic was funny.

Of all the things to discuss while Rachel was entering the world, my Dad and mother-in-law were debating whether or not Rachel would be bald.  The babies in Bryan’s family had lots of hair, which didn’t fit with Dad’s expectations.  Well, Rachel had just a fine amount of baby hair. As a matter of fact, that child barely had any hair until she was almost 1 and 1/2 years old.

Sarah Amelia was not really bald.  As a matter of fact, I couldn’t believe that she had so much hair (or that she was 9 pounds and 4 oz and 21 inches long).  Still, she didn’t have a tremendous amount of hair, but she had enough to brush!  By the time Sarah Amelia was 1 year old, she had a sweet little amount of hair 🙂

Currently, I like to classify Rachel and Sarah Amelia’s hair as a hot mess.  Seriously, neither one of them willingly lets me style their hair.  It is disappointing, but after twisting Sarah Amelia into a pretzel and 5-10 minutes of crying, she will eventually let me touch her “beautiful hair”.  Most days though, I just let it go and send her out the door in the best order possible.  Rachel now cares about her hair-style and will occasionally allow me to mess with it, not always, but occasionally.

yep - that's a mess of hair!

“Look at those beautiful blonde curls!!!!!”  This is a common exclamation that I hear from random people in regard to Sarah Amelia’s hot mess of hair.  The funny thing is, Rachel had “gorgeous blonde curls”, and so did I, my sister, and my brother (except his were brown).  When my dad was young, his hair was described as a “cotton ball”, and he loves it when his grandkids displays a vestige of his youth.

If Sarah Amelia follows in mine and Rachel’s footsteps, her beautiful curls will just be a memory by the time she is 4.  It doesn’t matter.  We think that our girls are just about perfect regardless of what kind of hair day they are having.

I have hope that baby girl 3 will be at least be a little more compliant with hair braiding and pretty little hair bows.  Optimism, yes – I have it!
